The Microplastic Diet

There is plastic inside of you right now. In a single year, 74,000 “micro plastic” particles end up in your food, which end up in your body. Micro plastics are regular plastics, but just broken down. That’s part of the major problem with plastics. Fossil fuel plastics never biodegrade, they just break down into smaller pieces, which have the capability of going anywhere in the world. Even your body. In a recent study supported by Anas Ghadouani, an Environmental Engineer at the University of Western Australia, an estimated 90 micro plastics are found in every liter of bottled water that we drink. For the average male, that means drinking about 349 particles per day! In the scientific community, very little is known about the long-term effects of ingesting micro plastics.

Some researchers say that when Micro Plastics enter our vital organs, chemicals can be released that could be cancerous, although this is more speculative.  Thankfully, we can do a lot to reduce the impact of micro plastics on our bodies.

Here are some ways to lessen the amount we ingest:

  • Drink less from bottled waters.
  • Use reusable grocery bags when shopping.
  • Use Neptune Plastic

However, even the most cautious people will still be subject to micro plastic pollution. The authors of this research conclude that the best way to stop micro plastics are to “reduce the production and consumption of fossil fuel plastic.” That’s what we do at Neptune Plastics with our all-natural, plant-based plastic. It has no negative environmental impact and keeps our world cleaner.
